Entry Requirements:
Candidates are selected on the basis of their ability to cope with and benefit from the programme. Their suitability can be demonstrated either through previous educational achievement or through experience and aptitude.

Admission by prior qualification will normally require a minimum 48 UCAS Tariff points with the majority of the points gained in engineering, mathematics or science subjects. Typically, points can be derived from:

o One or more GCE A level(s) or Vocational A level pass or equivalent
o Two AS level passes
o BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
o Other qualifications such as Scottish Highers, Welsh Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificates, International Baccalaureate, with the required UCAS points
o A pass in a recognised Access course
o Equivalent Scottish or Irish qualifications

Candidates should normally have a qualification at level 3 that has appropriate mathematical content. Admission by experience and aptitude will be based on the length and type of the candidate’s employment experience and his/her ability to demonstrate an aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject. As part of this process, candidates may be required to undertake aptitude tests and/or to provide personal and/or employment references.

Course Overview

The HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering is designed for students who want to develop higher-level knowledge and technical expertise in electrical and electronic systems. This qualification provides a strong grounding in core engineering principles while focusing on the design, analysis, and maintenance of electrical and electronic technologies used across modern industry.

You will explore areas such as circuits, power systems, digital and analogue electronics, control systems, and renewable technologies, alongside essential skills in mathematics, design, and project management. The programme emphasises sustainability, safety, and efficiency, preparing you to respond to the demands of rapidly advancing technologies in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, aerospace, and communications.

Delivered in collaboration with employers and aligned to industry needs, the HNC is widely recognised and offers clear progression to the HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering or degree-level study.

Course Overview

Modules :
Design & Project – applying knowledge gained from other modules into real world project situations
Engineering Mathmatics – applying mathematical methods to solve technical problems.
Engineering Science – understanding the principles underpinning engineering.
Electrical Machines – This module covers the principles, construction, and key operating characteristics of electromagnetic machines such as transformers, motors, generators, actuators, and transducers.
Electronic circuits and devices – This module introduces the use of manufacturers’ data to analyse electronic circuits and devices, covering amplifier operation, feedback types, oscillators, and testing procedures to evaluate circuit performance.
Electrical and Electronic Principles – This module covers the fundamental principles of electricity and semiconductor theory, introducing basic circuit laws, key components such as diodes and transistors, and the operation of simple amplifiers and logic?gate circuits.
